In the travel industry, a Passenger Name Record (PNR) is a record in the database of a Computer Reservation System (CRS) that contains the itinerary for a passenger, or a group of passengers traveling together.

Though PNR was first introduced by airlines that needed to exchange reservation information, in case passengers required flights of multiple airlines to reach their destination, in India PNR status enquiry is more popular for travel by trains!

PNR is a unique record locator, which will remain the same regardless of any further changes made.Here are the methods by which you can know the PNR status.

How to check PNR Status

Go to Indian Railways and enter the PNR for your booking to get to know the current status. Make sure that you have the PNR. You can normally find the PNR on the top left corner of the ticket.

If you find the India Railways site to be busy, you can also check the PNR status through other third party service providers like Cleartrip.

India Railways has also a pnr status enquiry facility via phones. You just need to call ’139′ from your BSNL or MTNL landlines and follow their IVRS to know your PNR status. This number is also used for other purposes like train inquiry, arrival or departure information, etc.

There are also a few railway enquiry by SMS options. You can know the PNR status on your mobile instantaneously by sending an SMS to 9773300000. Once you text message a valid PNR number, you will get an SMS reply showing the current PNR status along with other journey related details. This service is provided by Indian Railways in association with google.However, normal SMS rates are applicable for this enquiry.

You can also send an SMS to 139 as follows to know the PNR status and this service is provided by IRCTC.You need to prepend “PNR” to the PNR number and send the SMS to 139.i.e.

PNR<PNR number>

You will get the PNR status as a response to this text message.Note that premium SMS rates are applicable for this enquiry.
