BSNL Wimax Broadband Services

BSNL Wimax broadband services has been launched recently. This government owned India telecom giant became the first company to launch BSNL wireless broadband services using Wimax technology.

Wimax stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. This is is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes that includes from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology provides up to 10 Mbit/s broadband speed without the need for cables!!! Wimax technology is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard called Broadband Wireless Access.

Wimax is the fourth generation (4G) of wireless technology, designed to enable pervasive, high-speed mobile Internet access to the widest array of devices including notebook PCs, handsets, smartphones, and consumer electronics such as gaming devices, cameras, camcorders, music players, and more.Wimax is the first all IP mobile Internet solution enabling efficient and scalable networks for data, video, and voice.

The high speed wireless BSNL broadband connectivity will offer video conferencing, enabling tele-medicine and tele-education, besides providing other services like payment of utility bills, issue of birth certificates, land records, vehicle registration etc.

Indian government is also planning to associate BSNL Wireless broadband with all the ‘common service centres’ in rural areas, which are associated with e-Governance projects started by the state governments.
