War Memorial in chennai, as the name suggests, is a memorial for all those brave citizens who laid down their lives in fighting for this country.Some of these War Memorials are located within the boundaries of the city, while some are located at the outskirts.

War Memorial is dedicated to those soldiers who laid their lives for the sake of their country as well as those who died as martyrs, serving their nation. The War Memorial has been built to pay homage to those great martyrs.

During the First World War, many nations saw massive devastation and loss of life. In response, most cities in the countries involved in the conflict erected memorials, and the memorials in smaller villages and towns often listed the names of each local soldier who had been killed.

Two such most famous and visited memorials in and around Chennai, India are:

Victory War Memorial (Chennai):

The Victory War Memorial is located to the south of Fort St. George. This memorial is also known as ‘Cupid’s Bow’. A circular rock and marble structure have been built here, in memory of those who sacrificed and lost their lives for the country’s honor, during World War I. It is situated on Beach Road of Chennai, near Island Grounds.

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial:

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial is a relative recent memorial dedicated to the former Prime Minster of India, Raiiv Gandhi. Though he has not been killed in a war, this young Prime Minister was assassinated in the year 1991 by a human bomb, in Sriperumbudur, near chennai. Sriperumbudur is a town located on Chennai-Bangalore Highway, a few kilometers before Kancheepuram.
