Chennai is the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is the fourth largest metropolitan city in India and is located by the Bay of Bengal.Chennai is located near the 13th north parallel and 80 degree longitude. Chennai stretches its 40 km length along the south eastern coastline of India and extends inland by around 20 km. Chennai had a population of 4.2 million within its municipal corporation, in the 2001 census.

Chennai – Past and Present:

Chennai was formerly known as Madras and is a city that grew up under the influence of English settlement in Fort Saint George, during the British rule. The British developed it into a significant urban city and an important naval base. Around 20th century, Chennai became an important administrative headquarter and the capital of Madras Presidency. The growth and expansion of British Empire led to development of the city.

Chennai has been endowed with the rich heritage of art, literature and culture.It is for this reason that Chennai is also called as the ‘Gateway to South India’. The city is famous for its various cultural events, showcasing the performing arts such as Dance, Music and Drama at its best. Tamil literature is very rich in content and preaches ancient morals and values. Chennai is also popular for the glitz and glamour of Kollywood, the ‘Tamil film industry’. Many Tamil films have won acclaim in the international film festivals and have brought fame to India.

Today, the city has gone through a tremendous change and is developing rapidly. There are a number of industries here such as automobile, technology, hardware manufacturing, and health-care industries. The Automobile industry in Chennai is one of the leading industries in the country. It is also the second largest exporter of Information Technology in India, after Bangalore. Apart from this, the city is a leading player in the field of education and sports in India. Chennai is famous for its reputed educational institutions, hospitals and stadiums.

Weather In Chennai:

Chennai lies on the thermal equator and is also a coastal city, which prevents extreme variation in seasonal temperature. For most of the year, the weather is hot and humid.

Summer: Temperature ranges between 31 degrees centigrade – 42 degrees centigrade
Winter: Temperature ranges between 20 degrees centigrade – 32 degrees centigrade

Chennai receives the bulk of its precipitation (rainfall) from the north-east monsoon during October to December, every year.The average annual rainfall is about 1,300 mm (51 inches).

The best season to visit chennai is from January to March.
